What is a Real Day Out?

A Real Day Out (RDO) is an immersive experience for students (primary school, high school, VET, Higher Education) and teachers or community members to learn about future careers and job roles whilst developing 21st Century capabilities.

Is it part of a program or stand alone?

Run as a stand-alone activity or as part of the 21st Century Capabilities and Careers program, the Real Day Out provides a way to try out jobs of the future, gain introductions to employers, and develop an understanding of where industry sectors and careers are moving to.

Where do participants go?

Participants go to interesting workplaces and educational institutions with insight on current and future job roles including what employers expect and how entrepreneurs work identifying where the STEM is in job roles.

How are the Real Day Outs themed?

The RDO’s (and routes) are themed to match the career trucks, industry and regional priorities, aligned to 21st Century capabilities and future jobs, with new discovery technologies enhancing the learning experience.

What 21st Century Capabilities are developed?

  • Adaptability and Emotional Management
  • Communication and Influence
  • Digital and Social
  • Cultural and Global
  • Purpose and Vision
  • Learning and Mastery
  • Intelligence and Imagination
  • 21st Century STEM
  • Career and Workforce

How does it work?

Like an amazing race style treasure hunt, participants work in groups to solve clues and work through business problems at each stop.  Prizes and rewards may also provide incentives to engage in the activities and pitch solutions.

Social media is utilised through the day to reflect on learning, promote locations and partners, and for questions plus an overarching aim is to see if you can get the # trending nationally.  Content from the #RealDayOut across all social media channels can be pulled into an overall picture and/or participant’s eportfolios or for evidence of outcomes.

New discovery technologies, like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Social Messaging and the Internet of Things are integrated into the RDO’s.  Soon participants will be able to use an xAPI web based application to check into locations, watch videos and gain clues or information about where to next, record and upload fresh content.

There are many themes that a Real Day Out can based upon considering the career trucks, locations, industry areas, jobs in STEM and outcomes including:

  • Agriculture, Agritech, Drones and Horticulture
  • Building and Construction
  • Ecommerce, Fintech and Marketplaces
  • Carbon Neutral
  • Entrepreneurship, Research and Development (R&D)
  • Defence and Space
  • Energy and Environment
  • Export, Global Connections and international relationships
  • GigCity

  • Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities
  • Mining and Resources

  • Your suggestions…

What is the time commitment?

Leading up to your RDO there will be discussion and planning meetings, participant prep sessions

and/or content via video, introductions to particular stops where you have the connections, and input into the schedules.  If the RDO is for an education group, if often works well where teachers participate in a half day RDO and help to co-create the activity for students.  On the day, the start time is usually between 9-10.00 am with a finish time around 3-4.00 pm, in some cases followed by a networking or pop up event.

Who could be involved?

Partners and supporters might include:

  • Councils
  • Co-working spaces
  • Educational institutions
  • Employers
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Industry and business associations
  • Government
  • Parents
  • Schools
  • Teachers
  • Tech companies
  • Regional development agencies

How do participants experience future jobs?

Participants working in groups can select a team name and then allocate team members to the future job roles – for example AR/VR designer, Professional triber, Data scientist, Digital anthropologist, Business transformation practitioner, Cloud architect, Smart city designer, Urban innovator, Social media/messenger manager, Brand ambassador.

How and why might you get involved?

If you are an employer, entrepreneur, industry group, government and/or educational institution, with a connection to economic development, employment, growth and innovation then this is your opportunity to be involved.

At virtual and actual stops, participants will learn about future job roles, 21st Century capabilities and be introduced to your organisation.  Across the Real Day Out there will be a challenge to get the # trending nationally on social media alongside press, marketing and promotion.  There will be a kick off and cap off event where you’ll be able to network with VIP’s including Ministers and MP’s, business and industry leaders, key government contacts, technology vendors, educational leaders and students.
